Sangiri pattern is a representative kiln effect (pattern) of Bizen ware. This technique creates mottled patterns in shades of gray, black, yellow, and brown when a piece is buried in ash, resulting in an oxygen-deprived (reduction firing) environment. The pattern is said to have originated from accidental markings on pieces placed near the "san" (grates) of the kiln. The scenery created by wood ash and charcoal, with its subdued colors, naturally enhances food and flowers.
